Situation

The Donnelly Group recognized they needed to replace the underperforming, behind schedule and overpromised “Big GC” at demo stage – before deadlines and budgets were in jeopardy.

Setting

The Walrus Pub & Beer Hall is a Toronto Institution – a sprawling, multi-faceted establishment designed as an airy hangout for the Financial District crowd.

Solution

EN² was called in to rescue! EN² assumed leadership role as General Contractor, Project Manager and Construction Manager and Design Consultant. EN² hired own dedicated trades. Fast tracked schedule. Managed client, in-house designer and master trades to deliver one stop, complete fit-out to clients’ specifications.

Success

The Walrus opened on schedule, under budget and to a high level of fit, finish and client satisfaction. The destination Pub was up and operating on brand, on target, on time.

Barber & Co

SHARPEST TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Situation

Barber & Co. was established in 2011 with a bespoke barbershop in Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood. The concept was a hit and 5 barbershops’ later, the Donnelly Group saw the opportunity to take the concept to Toronto and supply stylish Bay Street gents with the experience the time honoured ritual of a cut, trim or shave.

Setting

Conveniently located in the Financial Districts’ underground PATH System, Toronto’s Barber & Co. is now the barber shop where stylish Bay Street gents can enjoy the comfort, culture and community provided by old fashioned barber service and a shot of smooth whisky too.

Solution

EN² took on the task as General Contractor and Project Manager working alongside The Donnelly’s in-house Interior Designer Taking on the complete build out plus overseeing the details of custom chairs, wood counters, cutting edge product cabinets – those authentic details that make this a sharp spot for men’s grooming.

Success

Barber & Co is now a destination space for haircuts, hot shaves, whisky, friendly banter and a nice compliment to the adjacent Donnelly Group’s hospitality offerings – upstairs café, beer hall and ping pong parlour.

Pong Bar

TABLE TENNIS & TV’S. TILES & TAPS

Situation

Subterranean entertainment venues need big personality and plenty of fun to engage customers. The Donnelly Group needed a complete overhaul of a basement location for a destination entertainment zone for after work social fun and lots of craft beers on tap.

Setting

Located on the basement level of the Donnelly’s Walrus Pub, Pong Bar is a lively beer hall with table top tennis, TV’s and stand up bars.

Solution

EN²’s crew provided Demolition, General Contracting and Project Management. New design and build out started with a cool speakeasy style staircase leading to EN² installed new electrical, lighting, venting and ceiling systems. New wall treatments – textured, plaster patina and fun blackboard paint were applied. Graphic floor tiles and an 1890 vintage bar (carefully dismantled from a bar in New York and reassembled by EN² in Toronto) added instant game and character to the space. Wrap around bar rails, custom picnic benches and real beer kegs animate the casual space.
TV’s and table tennis provide the live action.

Success

Pong Bar scored on all counts – it was on budget, on schedule and on theme. A real crowd pleaser, its raw and authentic and just what the target group -after work and condo crowd wants.

Steeles Royal Spa

GENTLEMAN’S CLUB WANTED THE ROYAL TREATMENT

Situation

An entrepreneurial investor group wanted to realize their dream of providing an old world, sophisticated gentleman’s club for discerning clientele like themselves. The clients knew what they envisioned but did not have a designer or contractor or project manager to execute on their behalf.

Setting

Located in a non-descript suburban plaza was a 6,000 square foot blank slate to work with. The site was in need of demo and complete fit out.

Solution

The clients were looking for a complete, one stop service to help Design, General Contract, Project Management and Build Out the space to their exacting standards. EN² worked with Julie Chapman Design to capture the ambience and aesthetic of a posh spa venue. The space was designed for club reception, dressing rooms, spa treatment rooms etc. EN² looked after client design approvals, materials, finishes and pricing. EN² then completed general contracting and project management.

Success

The Gentleman’s Club was a complete turn-key success. The concept was delivered on budget, on schedule, on brand to a satisfied customer and clientele.

269 Richmond

STATE-OF-THE-ART HERITAGE BUILD

Situation

Camwood Properties, buy and restore historic commercial buildings in downtown Toronto. Their goal is to retain the charm of heritage properties while upgrading to modern standards for today’s tenant expectations. Camwood and its General Contractor were experiencing a disconnect with the architect and interior designer. The renovation and build out had reached a point when the existing GC had completed their contracted scope and the client did not want to continue with completion of the space with them. The project was stalled.

Setting

Camwood purchased the heritage block of 269 Richmond Street West with the intention of retrofitting the historic properties and adding a substantial addition at the rear to create 6,500 sq.ft. of open boutique office space.

Solution

EN² was invited to act as Project Managers and “mediators” between both teams. EN² took over the Renovation and Build Out. EN² coordinated all trades, managed schedules and respectfully delivered the authenticity of old Toronto with smart new build technology.

Success

EN²’s communication between teams, coordination of trades and construction management expertise allowed Camwood to realize their goal of customizing commercial space across four floors, keeping the beautiful hardwood flooring, heritage brick accents and abundant natural light all while updating the old and new addition with state-of-the-art systems and new elevator.
